Service projects @CUHK 2021-22

In year 2021-22, I‧CARE Programme continues to support social service projects, in which thousands of clients in local community, mainland China and overseas countries will be benefited.


Rare Human Library - Life Story Programme

Organising Colleges / Faculties / Student Associations: CUHK Rare GoGo Service Team

Estimated number of CUHK students involved: 10

Project Location: Hong Kong


This project collaborates with Rare Disease Hong Kong. 20 groups of university students will be recruited to interview rare disease patients and then write a biography to record their unique life experiences. A book comprising of their stories will be published to raise public awareness of rare diseases.


 
Rare Disease Exhibition and Talk

Project Location: Hong Kong


This project aims to increase secondary student’s knowledge of rare diseases. Talks and exhibitions will be held in 10 secondary schools. Each talk provides easy-to-understand information about rare diseases to the students. Past academic papers translated by the team will be displayed in the exhibition. A website will also be designed to disseminate resources concerning rare diseases online to raise public awareness.


 
Young at Heart Ambassador Scheme

Project Location: Hong Kong


Children stay at home for long time under the pandemic. This project collaborates with Harmony House to conduct a total of 5 outreach days, hope to reduce children’s stress level. Activities included interactive game, film screening, and CUHK tour. To understand the needs of children and effectiveness of the services, pre-and post-surveys will be given to parents.


 
Online Community Physical and Mental Health Scheme

Project Location: Hong Kong


This project is led by Chinese Medicine students and support from alumni and staff of School of Chinese Medicine. The team cooperates with community centre to serve the underprivileged, hope to reduce their medical burden. Under guidance of Chinese Medicine practitioners, the team organises regular medical consultation with basic physical examinations, lifestyle and diet suggestions, health seminars and workshops in the community to promote both physical and mental health of the beneficiaries.


 
SEN With You

This project hopes to enhance public understanding of people with special educational needs (SEN), discover potential SEN cases and eliminate discrimination. A series of activities, such as talk, human library, film screening will be organized, hope to reduce stigma and provide support to people with SEN.


 
UniSophy

Project Location: Hong Kong


This project aims to promote educational equity and justice, hope to provide more learning opportunities and resources to underprivileged students. Senior secondary school students from low-income families, and students with lower academic results and lower awareness in career planning will be the service targets. Three different large-scale programs will be organized to provide academic information and resources to students, so as to enhance their academic result and facilitate their career planning.


 
Connecting Our Hearts

Project Location: Hong Kong


This project aims at improving the quality of life of the underprivileged and alleviating poverty issue. The team will cooperate with Caritas HK to organize different activities, including home visits to low-income families to understand their need, raise their awareness of physical and mental well-being. Voluntary tutoring and fun days will be organized for children, while eye check and eye-care talk will be conducted for the elderly.


 
Grief Me Light

Project Location: Hong Kong


Grief is a common emotion experienced after the loss of a significant other. This project aims to help the underprivileged recover from grief, improve their psychological well-being and raise public awareness of life and death issue. The team cooperates with different organisations to conduct talks, workshops, human libraries and grave tours, hope participants to reflect on meaning of life, and break the taboo of taking about death.


 
“Everyone could be Anyone's Peers”

Organising Colleges / Faculties / Student Associations: Shelter

Estimated number of CUHK students involved: 30

Project Location: Hong Kong


This project aims to promote peer support among mental illness patients and introduce different ways to cope with emotional problem. Exhibition and art workshops will be conducted to share methods of peer support, and encourage participants to express themselves through drawing. It is hope that peers could provide support to each other.


 
2022 Fujia Zhanjiang Voluntary Teaching Project

Organising Colleges / Faculties / Student Associations: Fujia

Estimated number of CUHK students involved: 12

Project Location: Zhanjiang


This is a new project initiated by Fujia Team. The team is cooperating with local primary schools and NGO to serve left-behind children in Zhanjiang. Voluntary teaching activities related to personal health and living environment will be conducted to enhance children’s hygiene awareness. Some extra activities, such as interviews will be organized for volunteers to have deeper understanding of local situation.


 
2022 Fujia Quanzhou Spring Project *

Organising Colleges / Faculties / Student Associations: Fujia

Estimated number of CUHK students involved: 10

Project Location: Quanzhou


This project serves the children of prisoners by providing them with chances to connect with the outside world. Each child will be matched with a volunteer and a 6-day learning camp will be organized. Learning activities on various topics, such as science, humanities and environment protection will be conducted. Children will also visit cultural heritage to learn the culture and history. Through this project, not only increasing knowledge, but the team also hope to let the children feel the warmth given by the society.


 
2022 Fujia Shenzhen Project*

Organising Colleges / Faculties / Student Associations: Fujia

Estimated number of CUHK students involved: 24

Project Location: Shenzhen and Huizhou


This project cooperates with a community centre to serve migrant children in Shenzhen and Huizhou, which aims at broadening children’s horizons and enriching their life. Online book sharing activity will be conducted to enhance children’s reading interest, and offline summer voluntary teaching activities and handicraft class will be organized to let children gain more leaning experience.


 
2022 Fujia Yunnan Flame Project*

Organising Colleges / Faculties / Student Associations: Fujia

Estimated number of CUHK students involved: 9

Project Location: Yunnan


This project cooperates with a local primary school in Yunnan to serve the children live in remote area. Through different teaching activities, the team aims to broaden children’s horizons and equip them with life skills. Home visits will be arranged as well for volunteers to better understand children’s family situation and provide support. Through this project, the team hope to show care and accompany children to encourage them live optimistically.
