"I∙CARE Salon" 2022-23: seminars on distinguished Chinese scholars

I∙CARE Salon is an iconic programme under the University Lecture on Civility which has been facilitating participants’ in-depth exchange of ideas through a series of academic seminars. In this academic year, the theme of I∙CARE Salon focuses on the works of the distinguished Chinese scholars who were closely associated with this University.


I∙CARE Salon has in this academic year organised three sessions of seminar. The first one (23rd session) titled The Life Experiences, Cultural Consciousness and Spiritual Spheres of Tang Junyi was conducted on 22 September 2022; Prof. Cheng Chung-yi* from the Department of Philosophy talked about the philosophical ideas of Mr. Tang Junyi, the founding Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at CUHK. The second one (25th session) titled Tradition and Anti-tradition: Ch'ien Mu and the Intellectual Flow of Early 20th Century China was held on 16 January 2023; Prof. Cheng Kat-hung shared the scholarly thoughts of Mr. Ch'ien Mu, one of the founders of New Asia College, and he also talked about Mr. Ch'ien’s research on scholars of the Pre-Qin Dynasty. As for the last one (24th session) held on 16 March 2023, it was titled Prospect of Chinese Culture: Critical Philosopher Lao Sze-Kwang. Prof. Lau Kwok-ying started with talking about how he knew Mr. Lao; he then introduced the triple identity of Mr. Lao, namely “poet and calligrapher”, “historian” and “philosopher”. The aforementioned three sessions of I∙CARE Salon attracted participation of nearly 350 CUHK students, staff, alumni and the general public.



* Speakers’ Biography


Prof. Cheng Chung-yi received his Ph.D. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and has been a member of the Visiting Scholars Programme at Harvard-Yenching Institute. He is currently Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Director of the Research Centre for Chinese Philosophy and Culture at CUHK. His research interests span Confucian thought, history of Chinese philosophy, comparative studies of Chinese and Western philosophy, etc. Prof. Cheng is the author of《儒學、哲學與現代世界》(2010) and《明清儒學轉型探析 ── 從劉蕺山到戴東原》(2000), and the editor of 《中國哲學研究之新方向》(2014) and 《香港中文大學的當代儒者》(2006)。


Prof. Cheng Kat Hung, Ph.D. in Literature (National Taiwan University), is Chair Professor of Cultural History at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). He served as Associate Vice President (Curriculum Development) at EdUHK, Professor in the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University, European Chair of Chinese Studies at Leiden University, one of the leaders of the “Project of Pursuing for Excellence (first phase)” initiated by the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), member of the Humanities Panel in the RAE 2014 of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong, and speaker of the New Asia Lectures on Confucianism 2022 of the New Asia College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research specialises in philosophy of Zhouyi, Chinese intellectual history, classical hermeneutic, intellectual history of late imperial China, and East Asia studies. He has written numerous books, including among others 《周易鄭解》, 《漢學論衡》,《周易階梯》, 《浙東學術研究》, 《戴東原經典詮釋的思想史探索》, and has published more than 10 editing volumes and over 70 reviewed articles.


Prof. LAU Kwok-ying received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from University of Paris I. He is Emeritus Professor at the Department of Philosophy, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He was Programme Director of M.A. in Philosophy and Head of Graduate Division of Philosophy at CUHK, Director of Edwin Cheng Foundation Asian Centre for Phenomenology, and Visiting Professor at various universities in France and Taiwan. His monographs include, among others, Phenomenology and Intercultural Understanding: Toward a New Cultural Flesh (2016) (awarded the Edwin Ballard Prize for the Best Book in Phenomenology 2019 by the Center for Advanced Research in Phenomenology, USA) and Traces of Phenomenology in France: From Sartre to Derrida (in Chinese, 2018). He is editor of Infinite Horizons: Professor Lao Sze-Kwang as Scholar and Thinker (in Chinese, 2003), Traveling at Ease Across a Thousand Schools: A Festschrift for Lao Sze-Kwang in Honour of His Eightieth Birthday (in Chinese, 2010) and several books by Professor Lao Sze-Kwang, including Lectures on Philosophy of Culture (in Chinese, 2002) and one of the editors in chief of A New Compilation of Professor Lao Sze-Kwang’s Academic Works (13 volumes, 1998-2001).
