The I·CARE Centre for Whole-person Development will stage the 6th I·CARE Book Festival from February to March 2024. We are now cordially inviting staff, students, alumni and friends of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to donate obsolete books at home so as to let them be revitalised from the lonely bookshelves for passing down to the next generation of CUHK people.
In 2012, the I·CARE Programme organised the first-ever I·CARE Book Festival with staunch support of alumni and teachers like Kin-sheun Louie, Lo Wai-luen, Leo Ou-fan Lee, To-kwan Lam, Felix Chao, Chan Joseph Man, Cheung Chan-fai and Jasminia Kristine Cheung. We collected over 10,000 books for students’ viewing, and each student was allowed to pick a maximum of five books for free.
In 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2022, the I·CARE Book Festival was re-run respectively with more support from alumni and teachers. We received even more than 30,000 books in the most recent Book Festival for students to pick up. Thousands of students benefited from the enthusiasts’ donations. While the response was proven overwhelming, the book festivals had achieved their goals - to keep the books move, to facilitate knowledge transfer, to foster reading culture and to connect different CUHK people through sharing of books.
Types of Collected Books:
Books of any subjects are accepted, except textbooks, exercise books, children books, comics, leaflets, religious scriptures (e.g. bible, sutra and etc.), expired magazines, broken and mouldy items.
Book Collection Procedure:
Books to be donated should go through basic cleaning in advance. The arrangements of collection will then be made according to the total number of donated books as follows:
1 - 200 nos.
Drop the book(s) directly at the I·CARE Centre for Whole-person Development or the I·CARE Book Festival’s collection boxes located at the University / College Library* during 2 - 14 January 2024. Neither registration nor reservation is required.
Opening hours of the collection points are as follows:

The I·CARE Book Festival’s book collection box is available at the following libraries*:
* Open only to holders of CU Link or CUHK Library Card
200 nos. and above
Please fill in the online form via here (The 6th I·CARE Book Festival Second-hand Books Donation Form) to indicate the number of donated books and the address* for collection. This Centre will contact the donor three to five days prior to the collection date, which is selected in accordance with the pick-up area (vide the table underneath), to confirm the exact arrangements.
* On-site collection service is not available for the Islands District, Frontier Closed Area, non-permanent address, and areas not accessible by vehicles.
Remarks:
This Centre may not be able to arrange on-site collection services for some of the applicants if the number of enrolment exceeds the quota. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Acknowledgement:
The name of donors who give 200 or more books will be displayed on the I·CARE Book Festival’s webpage as a token of gratitude.
