I·CARE Achievers Programme 2021-22



This Programme promotes various character strengths through well-designed activities like “Dialogue on Character”, “Retreat Day”, “Extensive Reading Scheme”, “Workshop on Value Clarification”, “Day Camp on Leadership Training”, “Farming cum Hiking”, “Course on Compassionate Communication” and “Remoulding Camp”. It aims to enhance the self-awareness and positive value of students, so as to promote healthy development of the community and the world. The Programme specifically hopes to help participants respect others, treasure humanity’s shared environment, be perseverant to cope with adversity, embrace passion to serve the needy, and possess a global outlook to address the world’s complicated issues.



 
Mindfulness Day of I·CARE Achievers Programme


The I·CARE Achievers Programme will present the Mindfulness Day to allow participants to make a quick pit stop amidst their hectic campus life, and to bathe in Tsz Shan Monastery which is situated in the tranquil and spacious nature. This Mindfulness Day consists of forest healing and other non-religious mindfulness activities to help participants put their worries and anxiety down, and refresh their souls. Taking this opportunity, participants will also enhance their understanding of the character traits such as “Gratitude”, “Appreciation of Beauty & Excellence” and “Spirituality”. Details are as follows:


Date: 25 November 2021(Thursday)

Time: 12:45 - 5:45 pm

Venue: Tsz Shan Monastery (88, Universal Gate Road, Tai Po)

Target: All full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students

Language: Cantonese

Quota: 20

Remarks:

  1. Round-trip shuttle bus service between CUHK and Tsz Shan Monastery will be arranged for participants. The activity time counts.

Sharing Session on Social Enterprise cum Muay Thai Trial Class


The I·CARE Achievers Programme is going to roll out theSharing Session on Social Enterprise cum Muay Thai Trial Class next month. Participants will visit the gym studio of a social enterprise Elite Thai Boxing and Fitness* to learn about how it addresses social problems and maximizes profits to sustain its business in tandem. It is expected to deepen the participants’ understanding of some character strengths including bravery, zest, self-regulation and kindness. They are also allowed to join the Muay Thai trial class to experience shaping their mind, body and soul through sports. Details are as follows:


Date: 13 November 2021 (Saturday)

Time: 4:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Venue: Gym studio of Elite Thai Boxing and Fitness (13/F, Fung Woo Centre, 279-281 Des Voeux Road Central, Sheung Wan)

Content:

  1. Sharing session (45 minutes) - Mr. Alan He, Chief Executive Officer of Elite Thai Boxing and Fitness, will briefly introduce their social enterprise and past social innovation projects e.g. those to empower the at-risk youths and other vulnerable groups to strengthen their body and mind, as well as to become sports coaches.

  2. Muay Thai trial class (90 minutes) - to acquire basic skills of Muay Thai and have fun under the guidance of professional coach (training items, such as dynamic stretching, empty boxing exercises, punching sandbags and two-person sparring, may vary depending on the actual situation)

Target: All full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students

Remarks:

  1. The Muay Thai trial class is designed for beginners and involves some moderate-intensity exercises. Students should take their general body condition into consideration before registration.

  2. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation email by 9 November 2021 (Tuesday) advising the arrangements of fee collection and deposit settlement, as well as other details.


* Elite Thai Boxing and Fitness is the first social enterprise in Hong Kong that mainly provides Muay Thai training service. It helps the at-risk youths and other vulnerable groups to develop a positive mindset and healthy lifestyle through Muay Thai and provision of job opportunities, so as to give full play to their strengths and talents. Other services include, for example, leading their students to offer free Muay Thai lessons to the youths with mood problems or with special education needs, members from low-income families and the elderly, as well as organising charity competitions.


 
Beginner’s Workshop on Compassionate Communication


“There may be a great fire in our hearts, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke”, wrote Vincent Van Gogh, the master of art. If it is possible to catch the swaying flames by tracing the smoke so as to comfort yourself with the warmth, would you like to try?


The I·CARE Achievers Programme is going to launch its first activity of this academic year, namely, the “Beginner’s Workshop on Compassionate Communication”. Through practising empathetic listening and expressing feeling in a conscious way, participants will learn how to find out the actual feeling and needs of themselves and each other, thus being able to transform conflicts into powerful connection, heal relationship and untangle emotion.


This workshop is open for all full-time CUHK students. Details are as follows:

Time: 2:00 - 5:00 pm

Venue: Room 502, Wong Foo Yuan Building

Content:

  1. Concept and gist (The four steps of Compassionate Communication: observations, feelings, needs, requests)

  2. Basic skills (Active listening with empathy, mindset adjustment to reduce conflicts, transformation of extremely negative emotions)

  3. Demonstration and group practice (Conversation exercises, role-playing)

Trainer: Mr. YY Chan (Experienced psychological counsellor, trainer and registered social worker; and has been engaged in social services, psychological training and family life education for nearly 20 years.)

Fee: Free of charge
