Tens of thousands of printed works donated to the I·CARE Book Festival

This Centre will stage the 5th I·CARE Book Festival in October and November to promote reading culture on campus. Same as previous sessions, the coming book festival will consist of various sections such as the “Book Crossing Pavilion”, “Book Talks” and “Exhibition of Good Reads”. The forefront allows CUHK students and staff to read spontaneously and collect for free the second-hand books donated by the bibliophiles. These obsolete printed works can be revitalised from the lonely bookshelves for passing down to the next generation of book lovers.

The first-ever I·CARE Book Festival was launched in 2012 with staunch support of alumni and teachers like Kin-sheun Louie, Lo Wai-luen, Leo Ou-fan Lee, To-kwan Lam, Felix Chao, Chan Joseph Man, Cheung Chan-fai and Jasminia Kristine Cheung. Over 10,000 books were collected. In 2013, 2016 and 2019, the I·CARE Book Festival was re-run respectively with more support from members of the community. In the past few weeks, more than 30,000 books were received for the current session of book festival. The response was proven overwhelming.

Amidst the vast range of books collected there are literature, science, nature, arts and design, etc. while classic and popular readings coexist. Each of them reflects the passion of the donor for culture, history, and life. From the piles of collection, quite a number of books touches on the modern history, cultural originals, documentation of street views of Hong Kong. Circulation of these books will inspire the readers to look at this city from multiple perspectives.

To make the book-crossing experience enjoyable, this Centre has utilised much space and deployed huge manpower to clean up, mend, categorise and re-pack the books into cartons. When the 5th I·CARE Book Festival commences, participants will find it convenient to uncover the hidden gems amongst the sea of books.

Please stay tuned for the details of the 5th I·CARE Book Festival which will be announced soon. For enquiries, please contact Ms. Tsui of this Centre at 3943 4702 (Tel) or icare@cuhk.edu.hk (Email).
