Hong Kong is a sophisticated blend of East and West, because it does not only occupy an important position in the history of modern China but is also inextricably linked with countries around the world. Despite its pivotal role in international context, Hong Kong is replete with tradition and rite. This Centre has thus conducted the Hong Kong Cultural Tours Project for long to facilitate CUHK students’ understanding of local history and culture. The project also offers free cultural tours to members of the community (e.g. secondary students who are particularly of ethnic minorities, being new immigrants, in deprived learning condition or from low-income families) to help develop their sense of identification to this city.
The Hong Kong Cultural Tours Project of the last academic year covered two themes and corresponding districts, namely (1) Funeral Customs and Development (Hung Hom), and (2) Aesthetics in Ancient and Modern Architecture (Tsim Sha Tsui). After a series of professional trainings and mock tours, 14 CUHK students had served as docents during May and June to lead tours for over 60 students from five secondary schools, as well as for 36 University students and staff, to unveil the hidden side of Hong Kong. Upon completion of the hectic schedule, this Centre organised an “Appreciation cum Sharing Session” on the 5th of last month for the participating CUHK students to meet their mentors and exchange experience and learning outcomes among themselves, followed by a review of the project footages taken in the past year. At the end of the event, they received the certificates of project fulfilment and picked their favourite photos from the “Photo Hunt” section for insertion to the tailor-made folder to take home.
To preserve and promote the unique culture, heritage and attractions of Hong Kong, the CUHK students participating in the aforementioned project are working intensively on the production of tour maps right now. As for the maps of the 2020-21 project, they can be seen in the website of this Centre via here, or collected for free from the following spots:
